Speaking at the recently held Nvidia AI Summit 2024 in Mumbai, Reliance’s billionaire boss Mukesh Ambani and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang had a fireside chat on all things artificial intelligence and India’s pivotal role in the domain. During the conversation, Ambani lavished heaps of praise on Meta’s co-founder and billionaire boss, Mark Zuckerberg. Ambani quipped, “I have great respect for my friend Mark Zuckerberg.” He further explained why, “He has made Llama open source.” The Asia’s richest man added, “Zuckerberg will go down in history for this.”

For the unversed, Llama (Large Language Model Meta AI) is an AI model that Mark Zuckerberg’s company open-sourced in July by making it publicly available, unlike proprietary models. The first foundational iteration of the LLM by Meta was launched on February 24, 2023.

Remarking on making Meta’s AI model public, Zuckerberg stated in the official blog that AI will develop in similar ways like Linux, which gained popularity for being open source in the era when everyone else was developing their own closed source versions of Unix. He stated how Linux has now become the industry standard foundation for operating systems that run most mobile devices and also cloud computing. In his blog, he took a dig at Apple quite brazenly for gatekeeping, which was also one of the catalysts in taking the decision to make Meta’s AI public. In a rare Twitter exchange, even Elon Musk gave a shout-out to the world’s second richest billionaire for his open source initiative.
