The Google Photos app will now include a new label indicating when a photo has been edited with one of its AI features, like Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, or Zoom Enhance. When viewing a photo in Google Photos, users will find a disclosure at the bottom of the “Details” section, specifying that the image was “Edited with Google AI.”
Google aims to increase the transparency with the new update as the company recognises “the importance of doing so responsibly with our AI Principles as guidance”. This feature will start rolling out starting next week. Google Photos will note when a photo has been edited with Google AI right in the Photos app.
As we bring AI-powered editing tools to more users, we recognize the importance of doing so responsibly. Starting next week, you’ll be able to see when a photo has been edited with Google AI right in the Google Photos app. Learn more → https://t.co/gGlC332oz5 pic.twitter.com/PwysdmGkLz

Notably, pictures edited with Magic Editor, Magic Eraser and more already feature metadata based on standards from The International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) to indicate that they’ve been edited using generative AI. With this update, this data will now be visible alongside information like the file name, location and backup status in the Photos app.

Along with marking when an image has been edited using generative AI, Google will also use IPTC metadata to identify images composed of elements from multiple photos through non-generative features.
Google, in a blogpost explained, “For example, features like Best Take on Pixel 8 and Pixel 9, and Add Me on Pixel 9, combine images taken close in time to create a blended image for capturing the best possible group photos.”
For the unversed, Google still doesn’t show a visible watermark on the image, unlike Meta AI on WhatsApp, Instagram and more.
This comes a couple of months after Google launched Pixel 9 series with new AI camera features including Best Take, Add Me, Auto frame and more. One of the highlighting AI features is that it can also let you create an image by just giving a text prompt. These kind of images should be easy to distinguish from others as they are not real and are created using generative AI.
