Meta is laying off employees across divisions, including Instagram, WhatsApp, and Reality Labs, according to a report by The Verge. In a statement to Reuters, a Meta spokesperson said that several teams are undergoing changes to better align with the company’s long-term strategic and location goals.
As per the official statement shared with Reuters, “This includes moving some teams to different locations, and moving some employees to different roles. In situations like these when a role is eliminated, we work hard to find other opportunities for impacted employees.”

Jane Manchun Wong, a well-known app reverse engineer who joined Meta’s Threads team in 2023, is among the employees who have shared news of their layoffs on social media. She wrote that her position at Meta had been eliminated and expressed appreciation for her time with the company. She also invited potential collaborators in software or security to connect with her through her website or LinkedIn.
Several users commented on her post. One wrote, “Meta lost a gem, best of luck”, while another user said, “Sorry to hear this. I’m sure you’ll go on to bigger and better things.”

As reported by TechCrunch, Threads, recruiting, and legal operations were unaffected by the reorganization. Notably, Meta has not revealed the exact number of employees who have been laid off from the social media giant.
A former Meta employee told TechCrunch that over a dozen colleagues on their team were informed about job cuts during video calls. Some of those affected received severance pay equivalent to six weeks of their salary.
Notably, since November 2022, Meta has cut approximately 21,000 jobs in an effort to reduce costs, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg dubbing 2023 the “Year of Efficiency.” In March 2023, Zuckerberg stated that the company would focus on operating more efficiently with its workforce. He emphasized that a leaner organization would be able to execute its top priorities more quickly, leading to greater productivity and more fulfilling work for employees.
