Commissioned as per the directives of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, the Supreme Court has a renewed lady of justice statute sans the blindfold. The heavily desi version of the Saree-clad statue is installed in the SC library. The sword in the statue has been replaced with a copy of the Indian constitution. As per top anonymous officials cited by the Adani-owned NDTV, the Chief Justice is endeavoring to move forward from the British legacy that ‘law is blind.’ Hence the decision to remove the blindfolds of the classic statue.

Lady Justice or Lustitia (Latin) or Justitia has its origin in Roman mythology and was introduced for the first time by the Roman emperor Augustus as justice was one of the virtues he upheld. The goddess of Justice soon becomes more of an allegory featuring a set of scales, balancing the weight of evidence of both the parties in a bilateral dispute. The earliest depiction of the lady of justice with a blindfold dates back to the 16th century. The blindfold was originally intended as a satire and later reinterpreted as being blind and a symbol of impartiality, although a handful of statues don’t feature the same. The toga worn by the statue is a representation of the philosophical attitude of the Greco-Roman world that signified justice as paramount. Meanwhile the sword signifies authority above all. However, per the sources cited in the media, the CJI views the sword as a symbol of violence even as courts deliver justice according to the constitutional laws.

Here’s how the netizens reacted to the new statue of the lady of justice in the supreme court premises. While several netizens embraced and lauded the shift from the allegedly Victorian lady of justice to a more Indianized version of the same, others slammed the move as a misinterpretation of justice and amounting to nothing but ‘statue signaling.’ “Law will discriminate with open eyes,” wrote one, “Judiciary coming out of the closet.” “The mask is removed,’ quipped another.
